How do I add more white space or a border around my QR code?

If your QR code is being placed very close to other graphics or text, it might be difficult for apps to scan it correctly. The blank margin around the outside of a QR code is called the Quiet Zone, and it is essential for reliable scanning.

While QR TIGER automatically includes a sufficient quiet zone in the image file you download, this space can sometimes be cropped when you place the QR code into a separate design program. You can easily add more space using the built-in Frame feature. Or you can add more space around the QR code using an image editor after you have downloaded it.

Method 1: Use a Frame within QR TIGER

This is the easiest way to ensure your QR code has enough space around it directly within the app.

  1. After generating your QR code, go to the customization section of the QR code's design.
  2. Click on the "Frame" tab.
  3. Select one of the available frame styles. Many of these add a clean, simple border that increases the quiet zone.
  4. You can also add a "Call to Action" text within the frame, such as "Scan Me!".
  5. Once you have selected a frame, click the "Download" button. The downloaded image will include the frame, providing the extra margin needed for reliable scanning.

Method 2: Manually Add a Border in an Image Editor

If you need more specific control over the border size, you can add it manually after downloading the QR code.

  1. Download Your QR Code: First, download your QR code from QRTIGER, preferably as a high-resolution PNG file.
  2. Open in an Image Editor: Open the downloaded PNG file in an image editing program like Canva, Adobe Photoshop, or any other design software.
  3. Add Padding: Do not stretch the QR code image itself. Instead, increase the space around it by placing it on a larger background or by increasing the "canvas size" of the image.
  4. Follow the Rule of Thumb: The recommended quiet zone on all four sides should be at least four times the width of a single module (one of the small black squares in your code).
  5. Export and Test: Save the new image and test it thoroughly to ensure it scans correctly.
